Brisbane, November 2007

Local Muay Thai fighter Joel Mitchell warmed up for his fights in Thailand with a victory in Brisbane earlier this month.

Joel and Full Boar Thai Boxing Club stablemate Ethan Ross headed to Brisbane on November 8, 9 and 10.

Joel rematched tough Chadd Collins – who beat Joel in Cooktown the previous month – in a Fortitude Valley showdown.

The first round was all Joel’s as he dominated with well timed left-rights to Chadd’s head, followed with big knees to the mid section.

In round two Joel looked very comfortable as he stalked forward and punished Chadd.

In round three the Cooktown fighter picked up the pace, as he delivered straight rights to Chadd’s gut, trying to win the fights by knock out.

But Chadd was a tough customer and lasted the distance, although Joel won the fight by unanimous decision.

The crowd roared as Joel jumped up on the ropes, showing everybody he was number one.

The next night we travelled over to Beenleigh to a bigger fight night, put on by Prophecy Promotions.

It was now Ethan’s turn to fight, and his opponent was a tough customer flown in from Melbourne just for the fight – Melbourne versus Cooktown.

Both boys were cautious in round one, testing one another until the Melbourne boy unloaded a spinning heel kick to Ethan’s jaw, knocking him to the canvas.

As the referee started to count, Ethan rose to his feet only to be knocked to the ground again, but ‘ding, ding’ – it was the end of round one.

In round two I told Ethan to go forward, which he did, digging deep and punching his way through to win the round.

Round three was a war, as both boys wanted the victory, but the judges couldn’t separate them and called the fight a draw.

As this article goes to print Joel, Clayton Cook and Courtney Bird will be training and fighting in Thailand at the Muay Thai World Titles, the world’s biggest Muay Thai event.
