Mareeba “The Best of the Best”, May 2007
The showdown between two of the region’s best Thai boxers will explode in Mareeba next weekend (MAY 19).
Australian title-holder Dan Schmid will tackle former Cooktown Full Boar Thai Boxing Club prodigy Braid Jackson, who is returning to the ring after a two-year hiatus, at the Mareeba PCYC next Saturday. Schmid said he was always confident when he stepped into the ring, and next weekend’s The Best of The Best II showdown would be no exception. “I’ve got some secret weapons, but they will have to remain a secret until the night,” he said.
But Jackson has other plans.
The 21-year-old, who beat Schmid at the age of 15, and again the following year, is looking forward to testing out his Muay Thai skills again.
“My best weapons are my kicks, knees and elbows, and I am going out there to beat him,” Jackson said.
And the quality card on the Full Boar and Mareeba Boxing Team show, The Best of the Best II, does not stop with the main event. Two of the Far North’s best known female fighters, and former gym-mates, Cairns’ Kelly Marriage and Cooktown’s Sarah Martin, have signed up as the semi-main event.
Both girls are keen for a win, and have agreed to fight knees to the head. Full Boar fighter and World Championship gold medallist Jeremy Pyke will make his long-awaited return to Muay Thai, after a four-year lay-off, stepping in under full-Thai rules (knees and elbows to the head) against Townsville’s Jason “the Madman” Mailman. Martin’s Full Boar stablemates Courtney Bird, Joel Mitchell, Jake Stevens, Stevie Collier, Rhys Retton-Howe and Clayton Cook will also be fighting.
Boxing fans will also be served up a dish of gloves, guts and gifted fighters with the Mareeba Boxing Team’s best pugilists ready to take it toe-to-toe with some tough opponents.
The show kicks off at 6pm, with a licensed bar and Soho’s hottest card-girls spicing up the night.
