Mareeba October 2006

Mareeba PCYC Hall was the place to be on Saturday night when the Cooktown Full Boar Thai Boxing Club and Mareeba Boxing Team presented the crowd with a night of boxing and Thai boxing action. The night began with six Thai boxing fights, including Full Boar trainer Vince Parkes and long-time student Mick McMurdo. Parkes was matched up against First Strike Muay Thai trainer Michael Orec in a three round fight, with full Thai rules, which include knees and elbows to the head.
Both fighters came out hard in the first round, with Parkes picking up the pace in the second round, dropping the First Strike fighter with a knee to the head.
Orec returned to his fight, but was met by a straight right, dropping him to the canvas.
The First Strike corner threw in the towel, awarding the fight to Parkes by way of a technical knockout.
Mick McMurdo took on Glen Tucker from Intense Muay Thai in Cairns, with both boys punishing one another throughout the three round fight. Tucker was evasive, but McMurdo had the higher work rate and scored more shots, winning the fight by points.
The night then swung into the boxing, with seven bouts scheduled, including Full Boar Thai boxer Joel Mitchell against Ingham boxer Cameron Coppo under boxing rules.
It was a big ask for young Mitchell, 11, as the experienced Coppo, who was bigger and older, had just won a silver medal at the State Titles in Cairns.
Mitchell was instructed to take the fight up to the bigger boy, which he did, with both boxers giving their best for three rounds using body and headshots.
In the end it was too close and came down to the judges, who scored the win to Coppo, although many fighters, trainers and spectators said the fight should have gone to Mitchell.
Mareeba Boxing Team promoter Ross Cardillo and Full Boar’s Vince Parkes hailed the event such a success; they are already in the planning stages of another show to be held in Cairns early next year.
