Goals/Objectives and Event Outline

Full BoarCooktown Full Boar Thai Boxing club aims to help people gain self-confidence and fitness through Thai-boxing.

We provide a place for local youth to come, where they can participate in a healthy sport without any of the social barriers that may exist in school, work or home life (such as race or gender).

We hope the training we provide for these youth will give them something to strive for and focus their energy on, a goal for themselves.

A big part of the Cooktown Thai boxing club has also been the participation of the Indigenous community, from Cooktown, Laura and Hope Vale.

It means a lot in a small community like Cooktown to have the respect of the Indigenous people, and the club has worked closely with the local Indigenous residents to establish that mutual respect.

The club began holding annual fight nights to showcase the sport within the community, and to show people the talent that was hidden in the local youth.

These fight nights have previously drawn competitors from within the Far Northern Region, and one gym from the Sunshine Coast.

Our aim now is to expand our fight nights to a national level, to attract fighters from all the States.

Our gym now has fighters who have reached a level of competition where they must fight the best in Australia, and to do that we must bring the best in Australia to our fight nights.

To explain the situation a little further, the gym that organises a fight night must pay for the travel, accommodation and expenses of all the competitors, and in turn the competitor’s gyms will return the favour when they hold a fight night.

Therefore it is much more expensive to pay for the travel costs of competitors from interstate gyms, which we are hoping to be able to do.

Our gym feels that the community would benefit from the exposure such an event would bring to Cooktown, as well as the influx of people who come to compete or spectate at the fight night.

Our fights range from an amateur fight of three two-minute rounds, to professional bouts of five three-minute rounds, with or without prize money.

As assistant manager of the club, I would like to see these annual events expand to their true potential and become recognised Australia wide on the Thai-boxing circuit.
